Hi There – Lin here – welcoming you to “Lin’s corner!” You have popped in here either from curiosity or because like so many people you feel that something is not quite right with your present position, or that you feel that your hopes and dreams around a career that you would really love to be involved in - will never come to pass. Over the last ten years when candidates are asked why they are leaving their present position – we always hear a version of a couple of different reasons. They basically center around a feeling of unworthiness in the company (eg skills not being utilized, being taken advantage of, need more money, underpaid for what is being done, could do better elsewhere, need recognition, have been retrenched …..). All these reasons – in my opinion - are an indication of an External Locus of Control – in other words, the person doesn’t feel in control of his/her life – things are being done to him. Once we start changing our stance on this, and start looking at ways we can take control of our lives and destiny – then the sky is the limit. We are no longer like Flotsam and Jetsam tossed around by life’s circumstances. At the moment we are also daily bombarded with “bad times” and “recession” news. Ask 100 economists to define a “recession” and you will get 100 different answers – but the essence of it is that the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has dropped by a percentage over 2 quarters. That percentage is often between 3% to 5% - what always amazes me is that you have an economy with billions and billions and billions being turned over on a daily basis, and that drops by a small percentage and everyone is expected to focus their energy on what is not there. I believe a far healthier attitude is to look rather at the 97% that keeps on chugging away day after day. All the jobs that are still there! All the wonderful opportunities! Some of the largest companies were actually started in the “Great Depression”. (I can’t fathom why anyone would want to call it a “Great” – but still!) To this end I have been able to gather some tools, which I have seen used over the years with incredible results. Sometimes the concepts are mine – and have just been fashioned in a quick style, so that the reader can grab the essence of the message. Most often the material has come from other sources, which again, I have précised so that the reader can utilize “the message” within the material. All of this material is referenced, and if the book is of interest to you – then I strongly recommend you pop out and buy it! The first section is labeled “Your Career” and consists of:- A Passion Test (this will help you identify the things that you are drawn towards – not something that someone has told you - you will be good at!) Transferable Skills (this will help you to then identify skills that you have – remember all skills are marketable!) Creating a Great CV (this is a different look at the traditional way of putting together a cv – and will really get your creative juices flowing!) The Interview (this is a short document to assist you in a couple of things that most often deny a candidate in getting that position they thought was “in the bag”!) The next section is labeled “Your Self-Esteem” – there are two articles here:- Claiming your Self-Esteem (unless your self-esteem is good, it is going to be very difficult to change where you are at currently into something or someone who is doing the thing that they love on a daily basis!) The Four Agreements (are a very basic, yet poignant look at how we respond to outside influence, and how we let that outside influence affect who we are …) The next section is labeled “Your Self Image” – with two articles:- Psycho-cybernetics (this is an oldie, which never fails to amaze me when I pick it up and read it again) The Mirror Technique (we love this in our office – with a number of the consultants using the technique and having lots of fun with it). Coming into this corner will be articles on Your Beliefs – as sometimes we can do all the above stuff, and we will become very successful, and then something goes awry and before getting all negative – with a little bit of exploration we find that we have self-sabotaged ourselves. This usually stems from beliefs that were created up to the age of 7, and some authors now believe that the roots of those beliefs actually are formed by the age of 2. (As you know beliefs formed when you are very young – are often not reality or a reality that works for us as mature adults. {I remember at about 3 years old forming the belief that the trees and flowers had some special language because they could all talk to each other and wave and cause the breeze to blow through my hair!!}) Another thing that I am keen to get an article out there is basically saying YES to life and reframing our reality – when things are causing pain in our lives – into something that brings joy and fun and happiness. The W.I.I.F.M. (What’s In It For Me) in putting this together is the joy I feel when I see wonderful people around me having fun, feeling fulfilled, doing something that they love, and get lost in, and spend hours doing it because you are having a ball. So for whatever reason you are here I felt it was time to share a little bit of what I have been privileged to come to know and hope that if any of it resonates with you, you are going to grab the opportunity, take the time and see how you can recreate your life in ways that are going to bring you much joy and happiness. Please share with everyone and anyone who you feel may be able to get something out of it. P.S. By the way – please don’t get your knickers in a knot around the gender differentiation as I have used the quickest form to get the idea over – and if your boss is a “she” and you keep finding me refer to “him” – then I’ve just done it for speed! Please bear with me!
